Pastures New Farm is an organic and ethically conscious meat production farm in Saco, Me. We lovingly raise organic livestock and provide the highest quality meats and eggs. Our clientele has expanded to local restaurants and residents who value sustainable farming practices, are conscientious about where their food is coming from, and how the animal is treated.

, In the year ahead, we will be utilizing retail marketing through a small farm store on site where customers can purchase meats, eggs, maple syrup, honey, herbal medicinals, and more. We will also be selling wholesale to other farmers and local restaurants, and will offer Community Supported Agriculture contracts in tandem with other participating farms.

We are also planning much more- our long term goals are to add Pastures New Healing Center, Vacation rentals for campers (and glampers) alike, and expanding our farm store offerings.

We can wait to see what 2024 unfolds - and we thank you for being with us on this journey!

our history

My Mother Linda Bedell bought Thurston Homestead in 1989 from Rachel Thurston. We lived in a tent in the front yard because the house wasn't livable yet. She wanted to create a farm where people and animals could come to be born, heal, live, love, and die. We started rescuing horses, then puppies, kittens, more horses… and soon we were creating a self sustaining life out of survival and necessity. We have loved and buried many animals along the way creating the circle of life and finding new pastures.

My Love for the world and everything in it started very young, I wanted to make a difference. After moving back to the family farm in 2013 and having my own children, my world changed to Organic. I am highly motivated by food and I will not skimp on the quality. I did more research in that time of my life than I ever did in school. The more I learned the more I realized more people were just like me, wanting local, organic, humanely raised meats.

With my Native American upbringing, I discovered that I wanted to create a ceremony of life for any animal that comes to my farm. I want to honor and acknowledge their gift of nourishment, show respect and give peace in their last moments.

My promise is to provide for my family and my community,

our mission

  • To provide organic humanely raised meats; which means to acknowledge their gift of nourishment, show respect and give peace in their last moments.

  • To strengthen the family farm cooperative network in Maine.

  • To offer diverse goods and services through this network, distributing in a farm to family fashion.

  • To raise our children with a sense of community and respect for our land and animals.

Adrienne gathers organic free range eggs in the winter.

our animals

From our beautiful Livestock Guardian dogs, to our cuddly baby spring lambs- our animals are the heart of our farm and our hearts. Follow along with us on Instagram to see baby updates, chickens being hilarious, and all-around fun farm moments. We work hard, but have fun doing it!

Bailey, Zarina, and Michonne have been such a great team! Training Livestock Guardian Dogs can be very challenging and time consuming, however any good relationship takes work right?! Bailey is my front man who lets everyone know if they’re going over the speed limit, and is quite the gentleman greeter. Zarina thinks its rude to be touched without her consent, she is fierce and very talkative, careful once she makes sure you wont steal her chickens she’ll crawl into your lap. Michonne has had some trauma but i never gave up on her. She has come such a long way and i am so proud to partner with her. Michonne is Bailey and Zarina’s Daughter.

Pastures New

The Earth’s Circle is All Encompassing

Speak!

Let the past die, Its ashes feeding growth

old tendrils wither and fall,

their former robustness fading to gray stillness

And yet…

Their life passes on, new grasses rise,

new flowers bloom, new fields develop.

The pigs squeal, the lambs baa, the chickens cluck, the cows moo

Let that lesson be learned

By both me and you…

As we move on

to Pastures New
